A Cool Cake For A Cool Kid

So my nephew Paul is absolutely head over heals for the Cars movie so this was my vision of a cars cake for him.  It was the first time that I have carved an image out of cake and it was both easier and harder than I expected.  Usually my figures are made out of fondant but this was so much fun!  I made the car and base shiny but left the tire matte as tires just aren't shiny!!  Hope you like it, He did!!

A little taste of Italy...

So we got together with David's lovely cousins yesterday and I thought that I would experiment and make Tiramisu cupcakes.  And let me tell you...YUMMO!  I used a vanilla bean cupcake with a Marsala Espresso simple syrup and filled it with Tiramisu cream (real authentic - meaning marscapone, double thick cream, egg yolks...etc etc...) and iced it with the Cream mixed with Whipped cream.  Topped off with Bernard Callebaut cocoa powder and a lady finger.  Yummm...

40th Birthday Cake - Beer and Golf...gotta love men!

So this cake was for a 40th Birthday Party for a guy with a love of golf, beer and poker.  I only paid small homage to the poker but hope that I caught the rest.  His favorite beer is Budweiser so it was fun to try and replicate it.

Last Class

So for our last class with Rose Sen at SAIT we did a tiered cake.  We didn't have too much room for creativity but I tried to make it my own nonetheless.

Mmmm...Pizza...Or Cake?

So again, in class...learning how to make cake look like food.  This was a BLAST!

Came in it's own pizza box and everything!!

I got to use an air brusher and blowtorch!  TOYS TOYS TOYS!

Mmmm...

Baby Baptism for Twin Girls

This cake was an experience.  I had never done a tiered cake before and it was much easier than I had imagined.  I've done a few since and it's quite easy if you are taught the proper techniques.  So the client wanted pink pink and more pink for her new granddaughters.  I hope that it turned out well.

I worked VERY hard on this baby carriage.  I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Baby Girlies...

Bow Making

So my next class at SAIT I had the privilage of having Rose Sen as my teacher.  You have to check out some of her stuffOur first lesson with her was bows.

   Loved making this!

Halloween

So I was enlisted to help bake something for a fundraiser for the school.  The day that I was supposed to bake them I actually forgot.  So, with an hour and a half until I had to leave my house I threw these together.  Simple and fun.

I didn't have any of my baking tools either as they were in my car (from my class) which was in getting winter tires.  Groan...

I hate spiders...hate.  But I can handle this little guy.

Pretty Tiara for a Pretty Lady.

My beautiful little niece loves all things "pretty".  I thought that this cake would fit the bill.  And it was sooo much fun to make.  Please excuse the horrible quality of the pictures.  I took them sooo quickly as I was running out the door.

The icing started breaking a little as I didn't give it quite enough time to set up.  But I still loved it.

Dreaming of a cabin by the lake...

David's wonderful cousin Brent wanted me to make a cake for his wife Jenn for her 31st Birthday.  They have long wanted to buy a cabin by a lake somewhere.  This was my cutesy dream manifestation for them!

The "J" Shaped walkway took WAY too long!  I tried to marble every single little rock.

I liked my driftwood...it was the easiest boarder to make!

Learning at SAIT

So this summer and fall I have been taking some classes at SAIT to see if the Baking and Pastry Arts degree is the direction that I want to go.  They were a little more entry level than I was expecting but so much fun nonetheless.  It's been nice to get out and meet some women with similar interests and get some ideas on how to bring creativity to my baking.  Here's a sample of some of the things that we've done in class.

This was to teach us how to use buttercream instead of fondant.  And obviously how to make buttercream roses.  I LOVED my roses until I had to transfer them to the cake.  They kindof fell apart as we didn't have enough time for them to set up.  They're still pretty though!

These are kindof like the butterfly's that I made for my cupcakes, only much straighter and defined.  I don't know...I kinda like my whimsical ones better!

I LOVED this cake.  It's so simply beautiful.  Tricks with Royal Icing.  Simple and Beautiful.

This was just slopped on very quickly as we were out of time.  It was just an extra that the instructor said that we could do around the cake.  I like it better without.
This was such a fun class...I'm glad that I did it.
